That night, Shannon was playing and listening to some nursery rhythms from the handphone. After listening, Grandma noticed that she was mumbling something to herself. On closer listening, she found that she was singing in her usual ‘pelat language” a full verse of Jack and Jill nursery rhythm.
Usually Mum or Grandma would sing the beginning of a sentence and she would complete it by singing the last word e.g.
Grandma: Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of ____.
Shannon: water
Grandma: Jack fell down and broke his ____
Shannon: Crown
Grandma: and Jill came tumbling ______
Shannon: After
This time, without any help, she sang a complete Jack and Jill song much to the surprise of everyone at home. Later we found out that she could fully sing (i) humpty dumpty (ii) Mary had a little lamb and (iii) ding dong bell. She is now learning ‘down in my heart’, ‘one two buckle my shoe’ and ‘ten little indians’.
