Shannon has sebaceous cyst. It’s at her right earlobe. It started as a small pimple and grew slightly bigger when Daddy and I were in Australia. Mama and Kong Kong took her to a pediatrician and Dr. Y gave her a round of antibiotics. The doctor said it’s not common for a 2 year old to have it but it’s really nothing to worry about.
When I came back, it was slightly bigger and we went for a 2nd opinion. The pediatrician said the same thing and said that the cyst could be removed anytime and there’s no hurry.
A month and a half after I came back, the cyst got bigger and more swollen. Her earlobe is so red and it looks like it almost going to burst! We went to Dr. Y again and Shannon was referred to the ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialist as the cyst is near the ear cartilage. Went to see the specialist and Dr. V said her ear is too swollen to have the incision. We were asked to see him again in a week time.
Today we went to see Dr. V again and her opt is schedule in 2 Nov 2007 (Fri). He said hopefully the swell comes down; otherwise, it’s hard to stitch as her skin is very thin due to the swell. Dr. V hopes that the stitches could dissolve on its own. For that small incision, Shannon has to go through GENERAL ANESTHESIA (GA).
I can’t imagine! The doctors said it was necessary as she is too young to be still. He assured me that the procedure is safe. I questioned, why GA? It’s not like a heart surgery of a other major operation. It’s just to remove a sebaceous cyst .What about LA (local anesthesia)? What about a small tablet just to put her to sleep instead of a GA? Adults need time to recover from GA. What more a young 2 year old kid like mine? I can’t imagine her going through the side effects of GA. click here and here. What’s even scarier is a friend of mine just said that it might cause brain damage. Although the possibility of it is next to zero, but then again…it’s really a scary thought! Read here.
Tomorrow, Atta and Grandma are taking her to the pediatric surgeon to ask his/her opinion. I really hope GA could be avoided. The cyst must be removed because it could affect her ear cartilage and lead to deformation. I hope and pray that she doesn’t have to go through GA. If yes, I pray that she will be alright. Dear readers, if you are reading this post, please pray for Shannon.
